Guest Hosts

Joseph Penola

Joseph Penola is the Founder and Executive Director of The You Rock Foundation (YRF), a music-based mental health 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was created as a result of Joe’s battle with depression and subsequent suicide attempts. YRF instills a sense of self-worth in others while using music and the artists behind it as a way to help people express themselves and overcome mental health struggles.

Despite being surrounded by supportive family and friends, Joe couldn’t confide in anyone when he was experiencing suicidal thoughts. He felt like music was able to speak for him, and it eventually allowed him to find his own voice, talk about his illness, and get the help he needed.  YRF’s video interviews with bands like Slipknot and Korn have given music fans the same kind of inspiration that was instrumental in Joe’s healing. And YRF’s social media campaigns have helped its followers find a value for themselves that he claims he lacked.

Jim Penola

Jim Penola is a storyteller and mental health advocate. He has been intimately involved with music-based mental health non-profit The You Rock Foundation in a plethora of roles since its inception in 2013 and has been a freelance storyboard artist for almost as long. In 2020, he was accepted into the graduate program at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) where he is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing.

Jim is also the writer, producer, and host of podcast “An Invitation to THE INVITATION” which breaks down the 2015 film THE INVITATION in rich, exhaustive detail while concurrently addressing Jim’s own mental health journey. The narrative/critical series has earned acclaim from beloved filmmakers & actors Karyn Kusama (“Jennifer’s Body”), John Carroll Lynch (“Lucky”), and Logan Marshall-Green (“Adopt A Highway”) among others.

You Rock Foundation

It’s estimated that nearly twenty million people are affected by depression in the United States. Left untreated, depression can lead to feelings of hopelessness, decreased neurological function, interpersonal isolation, and loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed. Depression remains the largest perpetuator of suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death amongst adolescents ages fifteen to twenty-four and the second leading cause of death in college students.

The You Rock Foundation is a music based, non-profit organization that was created to serve as a safe haven for those who have suffered or are currently suffering with depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, and mental health issues. Using music as a backdrop, You Rock seeks to pull those suffering out of the dark and show them the possibilities of moving forward with life.

In addition to being entertaining, Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles is an informative podcast sharing vital information on achieving good health and self-improvement.  In our support for mental health awareness, Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles also makes available lifesaving resources through the non-profit organization, the You Rock Foundation.

The Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles podcast supports and promotes the You Rock Foundation and will continue to do so in a quest to help spread mental health awareness, provide necessary resources, and battle against negative stigmas.
